Sound Engineer’s Daily Grinding at Soul Asylum Studios

Everyone outside the industry assumes that being a sound engineer is cool. No lies, it is but that’s not all. There are several layers and daily gridding activities in the studio that make us sick sometimes.

Setting up the whole studio, making new tracks, and going along with the best of the world’s musicians. These are our daily jobs. But that’s not all.

In this article, we want to share how we kick off our days in Soul Asylum Studio and what we do in real life to create your favourite musical masterpieces.

The Sun Kissing Morning Routine:

Our day starts in the morning by opening the studio and preparing it for the scheduled projects. The Soul Asylum studio has all the gears and equipment to set any customised setup.

Well, we love to have a cup of coffee or a smoothie sometimes. Depends on the mood.

As soon as we settle down a little, we start checking equipment like Mac Pro Tools 11, UAD-2 Hardware, Apogee conversion systems, microphones, speakers, and other musical instruments

We make sure everything is working just fine.

Mid-Morning: Meeting the Artists of the Day:

The mid-morning starts with chit-chats, laughter, greetings, and hugs. Not to mention, we also go through tense conditions. We work with artists this time and utilise our expertise in different genres. From Pop to Jazz, from country music to rock, we are ready with our team, making every beat right.

As sound engineers, our jobs don’t stop with technical assistance only. We make artists comfortable while they are with us, making them feel like one of us only.

Afternoon: Mixing and Mastering Continues:

We finish the recording session as early as possible. Some days, it takes whole days for a single recording, making it tiring for all of us. But this does not happen very often.

We spend our afternoons with mixing and mastering procedures where we use our tech consoles to balance and mix the recorded tracks.

We make sure that every element in the song sounds good and balanced after mixing. We then move to mastering the tracks, making them ready to be launched in the market, among the audience.

Late Afternoon: Doing Post-production & Having Coffee with Client:

Moving next, we capture our extra projects which are not related to the music industry but only to Ads, Jingles, television, and independent artists’ post-production works. Our diverse services here cover post-production for sound design, visual media mixing, ADR, and other services related to multimedia.

Afternoons are our coffee break and believe us, clients are a great choice to share your coffee with. We do client meetings for upcoming projects, customer needs, project progression, and future meetings if needed

Evenings: Creativity and Collaboration at its Peak:

Here comes my favourite part. As the sun goes down, our studio turns into a live jamming session almost every day. There come songwriters, artists, producers, and musicians to create new tracks, brainstorm new ideas, making a real vibe moment for all

The evenings allow us to utilise our time in networking as well. We meet so many vibrant talented people each day alongside the tech & business masters.

Nights: Discovering the Artist Within:

Being very true, being a sound engineer means you have to be ready with your skills to complete your submission in time. Sometimes the project schedules get so tight that we have to work till late in the night.

They can be anything- film post-production, complex mixing, a music album, or soundtracks of big projects. These are lengthy projects and time-consuming, often catching us out of our comfort zone. But the rewards we get are always worth it.

Late Nights: Making Most from the Lonely Hours:

The most magical hours come with stillness. When darkness falls on the ground and everything is sweetly stilled, creativity sparks through hearts.

There seems to be a completely different magic in the studio, enhancing the emotional depth of artists & sound engineers, making them feel more and create more. To some of us, creativity only comes when it’s dark & quiet. For me, night feels like a strange friend, letting me dive deep into the emotions. This is the time when heart-wrenching masterpieces come to us.

It is the time when we start experimenting, allowing ourselves to explore unconventional methods, sonic textures, and mic techniques, and discover new raw sounds to enhance the sound effects.

Finishing the Day:

It is time now to wrap up our belongings and head home. We unplug all equipment and let the studio breathe after a long tiring day. We make our to-do list for tomorrow, double-check the wires & equipment, do some packing, turn off the lights, and close the studio.

On the Grounds, Working Outside the Studio:

Being a sound engineer, our jobs are unlike people who think are not limited to the studio walls only. The work goes to the city’s vibrant musical culture, leading us to attend musical events, workshops, seminars, and interviews alongside some professional trips with our clients.

All these surely bring some great connections though we’re not running after them only. The idea is to be a part of becoming part of the music community, understand the evolution, and stay with each other in all kinds of situations.

This is all about creating professional friendships for a lifetime.

Future Calling- Understanding Today to Catch Tomorrow:

We all have seen technology growing from a cassette to cloud music software. It is continuously evolving and trust us, the future is going to be something that we can’t even imagine now.

Learning what’s new to the industry and adapting to the changes are our priorities. We embrace the change and innovate our working methods to stay on the charts.

Being a Sound Engineer isn’t Only about Sound:

Being a sound engineer is not always about SOUND. Our work goes into professional business development as well. We meet with clients, producers, and artists, of course. The world of music-making is dynamic and for us, it is an everyday rollercoaster.
