Dolby Atmos is Evolving the Music & Home Entertainment

How Dolby Atmos is Evolving the Music & Home Entertainment

Decades have passed since Dolby Atmos entered the entertainment industry for the very first time. It is still out of mainstream entertainment as it needs an advanced system with more than 100 devices working simultaneously. In total the number is 118. But the world of technology is exponentially evolving towards better and personalised entertainment. The 3-D models, open AI, and big smartphone companies- all are looking forward to transforming the industry into a big Giant.

Dolby Atmos has been effectively transforming the music industry as it makes entertainment more realistic. The sound is no more a 1-D or 2-D experience. It now wants you to feel the minutes of sound vibrations in a 3-D space.

Dolby Atmos Technology:

Dolby Atmos is an advanced technology of sound setup that projects all the sound in a 3-D space in a way that feels realistic to the audience. This way, the listener doesn’t feel like an audience but a part of that ongoing entertainment, visual or sound.

The entertainment industry has always been seeking the best of technological advancement. The 2-D sound system was the simplest without any variations in the production & transfer of the audio. Then came the audio system that used to manipulate sound between two end speakers of a headphone and now we are into the 3-D progression of the Music industry.

This audio technology involves wall speakers, ceiling speakers, back speakers, and front speakers, and speakers placed at different angles from the main subject to create depth & space in the audio track.

The Dolby Atmos technology comes with enhancements in traditional sound standards 5.1 & 7.1. The technology works on 5.1.2 and 7.1.2 which includes the sound devices from above & behind additionally to the traditional sound system.

The 5.1.2 system is the minimum standard of Dolby Atmos that requires four surround sound devices that includes a centre channel speaker, subwoofer for LFE, and 2 overhead height speakers. The 7.1.2 system surround setup includes 6 surround speakers that are a centre channel speaker, a subwoofer for LFE, and 2 overhead height speakers.

Dolby Atmos Effects on Music Industry:

Atmos Technology is the successor of Dolby Digital. This technology first came in 1992 and gave the traditional 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound systems, giving a new age to the experience overall. In such a sound technology, the listener experiences the realistic, in-depth, and personalized sound quality that makes the listeners feel like a part of the show and not treat them as an audience. The reports showed that the audience reportedly was more involved in the Dolby Atmos sound system and enjoyed a movie more than ever.

The new above and behind speakers produce sounds along with the traditional speaker setting that makes you feel sound overhead and from behind. One can enjoy a movie by being a part of it, being lost in the movie.

Though it was invented in 1992, the theatres started using it quite recently in 2012. The technology is still new to the world and now is reaching home entertainment as well.

Dolby Atmos Effects on Home Entertainment:

Now we are using Dolby Atmos technology on our mobile phones. Though its numbers are still negligible, the entertainment industry has now started adopting it in theatres and home entertainment platforms. The home theatres are excellent hosts for Dolby Atmos. Where the traditional sound system was using a single dimension sound propagation, the Dolby Atmos creates 3-D space sound by evolving the whole sound system setup. Dolby Atmos is transforming home theatre entertainment with these factors.

1. Immersive Audio Quality:

The audio quality of Dolby Atmos is a larger-than-life experience. You feel a 3-Dimensional sound approaching you. In such a case, you experience each sound piece working as important as the main sound in creating the real-world mirror in the audio or video. You feel the games and videos by being a part of it and not just being an audience.

2. Object-based Audio Experience:

The object-based sound system is actually the base of Dolby Atmos technology. Traditional audio technology routes the sound to specific channels to throw at the audience. This creates a monotonous sound propagation from all sides. But Dolby Atmos understood that we listen in 3-D format. It takes a more precise attempt at the audio experience.

The sound is here treated as an individual object. The technology places it in such a way that you feel each sound coming from a specific distance & intensity. It creates a more dynamic experience for the audience.

3. Overhead Speakers:

The 3-D audio technology brought an additional audio speaker placement at your ceiling. The speaker is called the overhead audio speaker which is to use the audio to create a feel of height. This extra dimension allows audio to seamlessly flow through and from all directions making the sound propagation more realistic to the audience.

4. Adaptive Nature of Audio:

Dolby Atmos is not a fixed setup of speakers but it offers adaptive audio technology. You can change the configuration with the number of speakers & their setup to give a suitable experience to yourself. Optimizing your audio setup includes the personally preferred placements of speakers in the home theatre that can scale up your entertainment and comfort multiple times.

5. Compatibility & Scalability:

The biggest flex Dolby Atmos has is its compatibility & scalability. It can adapt to the size and space with its varying number of speakers. The technology adapts to several speaker configurations and room sizes. Along with it, Dolby Atmos is compatible with several audio formats such as Blu-ray discs, Streaming services, and gaming consoles. The compatibility and scalability of the system make it a better choice for home theatres as you can establish changes whenever you need.

6. Expanded Content:

We’re all looking forward to better content. Be it our favorite OTT platforms web series or movies, we all are in a new world of audio technology where everything is personalized for the audience. Though Dolby Atmos has completed its 3 decades, it’s still new to the industry. But the good news is here. The industry has recognized its potential and now they are all into it. More content is produced and made that supports Dolby Atmos. Thus your home theatre is going to be more reasonable for the future entertainment industry.

Conclusion:

These years of the 21st century are witnessing a great change in the music industry. The sound is getting personalized and making the entertainment dimension-rich. Dolby Atmos is the future of music & home theatres. Very soon we will be listening to 3-Dimensional soundtracks in our homes.
